The Joy of Creation: Story Mode (TJoC:SM) is widely regarded as the greatest FNAF fan game ever made. Built in Unreal Engine by Nikson, it drops the static camera formula entirely and puts you in first-person control of different members of the Cawthon family as they fight to survive against the terrifying Ignited animatronics inside their own home. Across five completely distinct memories — each with its own mechanics, setting, and playable character — TJoC:SM delivers an experience that multiple YouTubers and Markiplier himself have called the best FNAF fan game from a gameplay standpoint.

What Makes The Joy of Creation Special

Most FNAF fan games follow the same blueprint: sit in an office, check cameras, survive until 6 AM. TJoC:SM throws all of that out. Every one of its five memories is a completely different game with its own mechanics, environment, and tension. You go from defending a crib in a nursery to navigating a living room in the dark, to solving puzzles in a six-story basement — and none of it feels like filler.

The Ignited animatronics are a massive part of what makes this game stand out. These aren't reskinned versions of the originals — they're charred, broken, exposed-endoskeleton nightmares that look genuinely terrifying in Unreal Engine's lighting. Because the game uses first-person free movement instead of static cameras, the jumpscares hit differently too. Turning around to find Ignited Freddy standing right behind you is a fundamentally different kind of fear than watching him approach on a monitor.

There's also a sanity system that drains when you keep the lights off or stare directly at the animatronics. As your sanity drops, visual and audio hallucinations start creeping in, making it harder to tell what's real and what isn't. It's a subtle mechanic that adds layers of psychological pressure on top of the already intense survival gameplay.

The Five Memories

Each memory puts you in the shoes of a different member of the Cawthon family, with completely different mechanics and objectives.

Memory 1 — Bedroom (Nick)

You play as Nick, a child stuck in his crib, trying to survive until 6 AM against all four Ignited animatronics. Freddy appears at the window — close the curtains. Chica peeks from the closet — turn off the lamp and wait. Bonnie knocks on the door — kill the light and hide in the crib before he enters. Foxy hides under the bed — when his hook appears, lie down and close your eyes. A baby monitor serves as your "phone guy," with Michael guiding you through the night. The real challenge comes when multiple animatronics attack simultaneously during the 10-minute night.

Memory 2 — Living Room (Val)

Widely considered the most terrifying memory. You play as Val, Scott's wife, with free movement around the living room. Freddy and Foxy advance through hallways toward side doors — you monitor them via the TV (showing camera feeds mounted on their heads) and can slow one at a time. When they enter, you must hide against the wall beside the corresponding door. Bonnie marches down the central hallway in five phases toward a bolted door — check him through the keyhole. Chica appears at windows with a growl — stand completely still. The key is manipulating Freddy and Foxy's arrival times so they don't enter simultaneously while keeping track of Bonnie's advance.

Memory 3 — Office (Scott)

The easiest memory, but still tense. Scott has free movement in an office with four entry points. The goal is to find and flash Ignited Freddy 10 times across the entrances before 6 AM. But each entrance has its own threats: Foxy kills you if you flash his location, Bonnie destroys cameras permanently if you look at him through them (you must flash him in person), and Chica slowly crawls through a hole in the wall — find three hidden cupcakes to make her disappear.

Memory 4 — Basement (Scott)

A departure from the FNAF formula entirely. This is an escape room spread across six floors of puzzles. Each floor has a different challenge: escaping a bathroom while avoiding an endoskeleton, finding animatronic objects to burn in a furnace, solving a code using posters while "weeping angel" endos freeze only when you look at them, walking down a hallway without looking back, and luring weeping angel endos while walking backwards to avoid them. Checkpoints between floors keep the frustration manageable.

Memory 5 — Attic (Scott)

The hardest memory — and the one that sealed TJoC:SM's reputation. Scott is tied to a chair in the attic. Your objective: find Golden Freddy on security cameras and shock him 12-13 times. But The Creation is constantly advancing through the house toward you, breaking through barricades. You must shock it with a lever to reset its position. Two Fallen endoskeletons approach from rear doors (you can only close one at a time), and a third rushes a side door at random intervals. The lever has a slow recharge and is shared between Golden Freddy and The Creation, forcing you to balance progress against survival in a final stretch that multiple reviewers describe as one of the most intense experiences in any horror game.

Story and Lore

TJoC:SM takes a meta approach to its narrative. In this world, Five Nights at Freddy's is a video game series created by Scott Cawthon — and his creations have come to life to torment his family. Scott, his wife Val, and their son Nick each face the Ignited animatronics simultaneously during a single night in their forest home. Michael Afton appears as a mysterious figure found in the Cawthon's basement who convinces the family to let him stay. He thanks Scott for "bringing him into this world," and the story concludes with Michael apparently taking control of Scott's body. The game features fully animated cinematics and voice acting for all characters.

What the Community Says

TJoC:SM is consistently ranked as the best FNAF fan game of all time across the community:

Nixon placed it at number one in his ranking: "The best FNAF fan game that has ever released. By far my favorite FNAF fan game." He noted that the Ignited animatronics are "not only iconic, they are very terrifying" and that Bonnie's punch is "absolutely phenomenal."

Dexter called it "the best FNAF fan game from a gameplay standpoint that has ever been made," pointing out that Markiplier shares this opinion: "This was amazing. This is by far the best Five Nights at Freddy's fan game ever made just from a gameplay standpoint."

Plane Trace rated Memory 5 a perfect 10/10, saying: "This is not only the best looking FNAF fan game in my opinion but the best looking FNAF game in general." He added: "I am not joking when I say that this night is a 10 out of 10 and also the night that solidified this as my new favorite FNAF fan game."
